How MMR works

FormulaDota MMR is the number that measures your level inside the league. It is born from your real Dota medal, rises and falls across matches, resets every season — and at the top, it becomes a race for position. Here is everything, from the summary to the detail.

It comes from your medal

You enter at the MMR your Valve medal represents. We do not make you start from zero — we import your real level.

It rises by playing

Each match adjusts your MMR by the result (Elo) and by your performance. Beating someone stronger is worth more.

It resets each season

Every season the top is reopened. Nobody stays sitting in place forever — every cycle is a new race.

No inflation

Official Dota scale. Immortal starts at 5620 and the top is by POSITION (leaderboard) — no ceiling that locks you, no inflation.

The medal scale

We use the same official Dota scale: 8 medals, from Herald to Immortal. Below Immortal, each medal has 5 stars — each star is worth ~154 MMR (and ~200 in Divine). In Immortal there is no ceiling: the rank is by position.

On your profile you see the Valve medal (official Dota, the legacy) and the FormulaDota one (the season rank, on the same scale, with our skin).

Where your MMR comes from

When you play your first league match, we import your real level from your Valve medal — you enter right at the value that medal represents (a Divine 3 enters higher than a Divine 1). No “starting from zero and calibrating”: your medal IS the proof of your level.

This is part of the anti-anonymity: the public medal is your competitive identity. Without it, there is no way to confirm who you are — that is why a private profile does not join the queue.

Who you play with

The queue pairs you with people at your level. It starts by looking for players very close to your MMR and opens up gradually if you wait — so nobody gets stuck in queue during empty hours, but the default is a balanced match. You do not land in a game with someone far above or far below you.

Balanced teams

Both sides are built to have a similar average MMR — a fair game on both sides. That is why, when there is a gap, beating a stronger team is worth more in the calculation (just below).

Groups have a limit

If you bring friends, the level gap inside the group cannot exceed 2800 MMR. Otherwise you could “carry” someone and break the balance — it is the same limit as Dota.

How MMR rises and falls

Each match moves your MMR by two factors — plus a push when you are on a roll:

  • Result (Elo, base 25): a win goes up, a loss goes down. Beating a stronger team is worth more; beating a weaker one is worth less.
  • Performance: we measure the efficiency with which you generated net worth and impact for your team — damage, objectives, healing, vision and presence in the decisions, each at the weight of your role. Playing well in a loss makes you lose less — you either win or you learn.
  • Streak (momentum): stringing wins — or losses — together gives an extra bonus, so whoever is in the wrong place leaves it faster. It is what measures your consistency.

To avoid crazy swings, each match moves at most ±30 MMR — a bit more when you are on a streak. The exact change shows on the scoreboard and in your history (+ green / − red).

Performance is measured for real

We do not just look at the scoreboard: each match brings the complete picture from the replay (damage, gold, objectives, healing, control, vision, teamfight presence) per player. Each metric is compared with the average for your hero — fair across different heroes.

And each metric is weighted by your role — which comes from the slot you took in matchmaking. As soon as the match forms, you enter with your role defined (carry, mid, offlane, support…), and we evaluate each one on what is YOUR job: a core by the economy, damage and objectives it generates; a support by the vision, healing and presence that unlocks the team. Each role extracts value in its own way — and it is measured in that way.

The Formula is one, for every hero and every role: extract the most net worth in the least time. And net worth becomes ranking when it becomes impact: being in the decisions — objectives and the fights that define the game — is where the biggest net worth of the match changes hands. Extract fast and turn it into a win: it is the doctrine becoming a number.

At the top, POSITION is what counts

Above 5620 (the Immortal floor), the number stops mattering on its own — what counts is your place on the leaderboard for the season: Immortal #1, #2, #3… A global ranking, with no inflated ceiling, where being the best means being the real #1.

Seasons

Every season (2 months) the ranking reopens with a −20% reset, the same for everyone: you start near where you stopped and reconquer Immortal by playing. During the season the MMR does not drop out of nowhere — the reset only happens at the turnover. It is what keeps the top reachable every cycle.

Místico = Immortal

The top of your Level (Novato → Místico) requires Immortal. It is the promise of the methodology: follow the Formula → reach Immortal.

Public profile

To join the queue, your Dota profile must be public and calibrated — that is how we read your medal. It keeps the league clean of smurfs.
